 Welcome to Wayne County!

Upon your arrival, please visit the Wayne County Welcome Center in Collinwood, at mile marker 355 off the Natchez Trace Parkway and approximately 13 miles north of the Alabama state line. Our staff of volunteers will help direct you to your destination and provide useful information on attractions all across Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi.    Their cookies and coffee are pretty good, too!         All listings on this page are within a one hour drive of our Welcome Center.

Natchez Trace Parkway

WEBSITE

As early as 1733, French traders were using maps based on a series of hunter's paths that stretched from Mississippi into Tennessee. By 1810, the trail evolved into a clearly marked road of commerce, but there was always an element of danger: the Trace was host to robbers preying on unsuspecting travelers.

In 1812 steamboats began providing a safer and faster method of transportation from the Ohio Valley to New Orleans, and travel on the Trace eventually began to decline.

 Buffalo River in Wayne County

One of Tennessee's most scenic rivers, the Buffalo, meanders through the northern part of Wayne County. The river is famous as a float stream for many canoes.

From moderately fast rapids to lazy, slow moving waters, a journey down the Buffalo is to experience nature at its best.

For those who fish, the river is home to an abundance of small-mouth bass, rock bass, and catfish.

Tennessee River

The Tennessee River is the largest tributary of the Ohio River. It is approximately 652 miles (1049 km) long and is located in the southeastern United States in the Tennessee Valley. The river was once popularly known as the Cherokee River, among other names.

Pictured is the Pickwick Belle docked at the old ferry landing on Clifton's riverfront in Spring of 2009. Clifton Marina, Ross Creek Landing Golf Course and the T.S. Stribling Home and Museum are just a short drive away.

Tennessee Fitness Spa is located 95 miles southwest of Nashville, Tennessee at beautiful Natural Bridge. This historic site may be the only double span natural bridge formation in the world. It is a purely natural formation that was formed over millions of years by nature. Indians used the site over several different periods of history. Tribes including the Yucchi Indians from Mexico, the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muskogean, Creeks and Cherokees walked the trails around Natural Bridge long before the white man came to this country. The last Indians here were the Cherokees but they were ordered out by Andrew Jackson in the 1800's, known as the "Trail of Tears". The site is bordered by Forty-Eight Creek which is crystal clear cool water. Many species of fish can be seen from the banks. Another popular creation of nature on the grounds is the "Ice" cave. The temperature in the cave is a cool 58 degrees year round. The stream coming out of the cave is stocked with rainbow trout. Public access to the Natural Bridge is available only on Sundays from 10am to 2pm.

The Clifton City Marina recently opened after being closed for renovations for over a year. The marina property is made available to the City by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The City subleases the management of the marina to private business, thus creating a successful public/private partnership.

The renovations to the facility included deepening the harbor depth, installation of new boat slips, installation of new fuel tanks, improvements to camping facilities, improvements to the boat ramp, and construction of an onsite restaurant and convenience store.

Over one million dollars in improvements have been made to the facility. These improvements follow a previous project to stabilize the erosion of the riverbank of the marina in 1998. The stabilization project was funded through the City of Clifton and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Boat & slip rental, full service boat needs - sewer/pump-out, fuel, restrooms, shower, laundry, food, souvenirs and beer sales, local transportation, full slip services, transient dock and public boat ramp. Also have RV parking spaces.

Saturday 10:00a.m.-2:00p.m.

The Collinwood Depot Branch Library held its grand opening on September 4, 2001. It is housed in the Depot Station that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places April 1, 1988. The current building was originally built in 1916 which was home to 4 rooms. The Depot was placed next to the completed railway that connected Collinwood to Iron City in 1913. With the town booming in 1918, a baggage room and additional warehouse were added to the station.

With railway operations on the down turn, the station ceased operation on 1939 and the tracks were removed in the early 1940's. After the abandonment and removal of the railway the Depot was, in the ensuing years, used as a house, warehouse, and at one time a grist mill. The Collinwood City Government utilized the Depot as City Hall from 1965-1977 and later was called home by a Senior Citizen Center. To the advantage of the citizens of Collinwood the depot building was newly renovated and is know known as "The Collinwood Depot Branch Library".
